Abstract

The structural characteristics of five new arsenates recently discovered in the active Arsenatnaya fumarole at the summit of the Second Scoria Cone of the Northern Breakthrough of the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption (Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka, Russia) are given. Polyhedral complexes of edge-linked tetragonal pyramids CuO5 or CuO4Cl have been identified in the structures of three copper arsenates. Dimers formed by pairs of edge-linked Fe-octahedra have been identified in the heteropolyhedral frameworks of Fe-containing arsenates achyrophanite (K2Na)(Fe3+ 4Ti) O2(AsO4)5 and manganobadalovite Na2MnMgFe3+(AsO4)3. A comparison of the studied structures with representatives of the lavendulan NaCaCu5(AsO4)4Cl·5H2O and alluaudite Na2(Fe3+,Mn2+)3(PO4) groups, as well as with other minerals with similar crystal chemistry was carried out. It has been noted that in number of first discovered minerals (153), the Tolbachik volcano now is the world record holder.
